Presenter Shaun Ryan on 21 years at Ideal World
As Ideal World celebrates its 21st birthday March 21st, we spoke to Presenter Shaun Ryan to find out more about his 21 years with the company....
How does the Ideal World of 21 years ago differ from the Ideal World of today?
In some ways Ideal World isn’t that different from how it was 21 years ago, but on the other hand it has changed so much. It’s still bundles of fun, very friendly and extremely entertaining. However, it’s so much bigger and better now. When we started we were so short of product we resorted to selling pictures of the presenters to fill airtime that would take weeks to be delivered! (I’m not joking) Now we have tens of thousands of products available anytime, with excellent delivery, easy ordering and a great returns policy.
What’s been your favourite product over the years (sorry- it's probably hard to pick just one!)
My favourite product is the Tefal Actifry. I’m 21 years older now than when I started at Ideal World and like most people my age have to watch my weight. The Actifry is brilliant at making low fat meals and incredible chips using hardly any oil. All the taste but without the calories
What has been the funniest moment you’ve experienced at work?
There have been so many funny moments at Ideal World but one which I will never forget is when we were launching an amazing deal on a pressure washer for a big birthday event. Our set dressers built a huge wall in the studio, about 8 foot high consisting of product and boxes to get the event off to a dramatic start. They got more than they wished for as at the very beginning of the show the entire wall collapsed and everyone had to run for cover as the boxes came tumbling down. We actually went off air for the entire hour while the studio was put back together! Thankfully no one was hurt but it was quite hilarious to watch.
Any embarrassing on-air bloopers?
I have been part of many on air bloopers over my 21 years but one that is often shown on terrestrial TV is of me taking the mickey out of another presenter (Sally Jacks) on air and then looking an absolute idiot myself by walking backwards into a massive TV screen on set!
What has your 21 years at Ideal World taught you?
21 years at Ideal World has taught me time goes too fast, it feels like yesterday when I started!
Is being a TV presenter as fun as it looks? Or are there unseen challenges?
Being a TV presenter really is a great fun job but it’s not quite as easy as it looks. It’s live, unscripted with no autocue so you have to remember a huge amount of information every single show and always be on the ball. That can be difficult sometimes, especially on the ITV shows which are live until 3 in the morning!
Do you ever get nervous before going on air?
I don’t get nervous very often but if it’s a big event like our current 21st birthday I do get the occasional flutter!
If you could sum up your 21 years at Ideal World in 3 words, what would they be?
Fun, Incredible, Unpredictable.
